Taxi Scam

Tell him you just don’t have a credit card….what can he do?

Montreal police are calling on the public to help track down a man they believe is linked to a scam involving phony taxis and bank cards.

Police say this particular scam has been active for years in the Montreal area. The scammers — who don’t have taxi licences or even driver’s licences in some cases — would rent out real taxi cabs and pick up fares on the street. They would often pick up their customers outside bars late at night.

Once inside, the cab driver would insist on payment by debit or credit card, and not in cash. Sometimes, they would also ask what banking institution their card belongs to.

At the end of the ride, the customer hands the driver the card, and the driver substitutes the real card with a phony one, while the customer enters a PIN number into a machine, which would then record it.

Then, with the PIN and the real card, the driver would proceed to access the customer’s account at will.

About 30 people have been victimized by this particular scam in the last few years, to the tune of more
